New Monitor Time

Post by Commando »

Time for a new monitor! Recommendations would be appreciated. :)

Size: 24" +
Resolution: Lower is better (though they all seem to have the same res at that size)
Surface: Preferably matte, or good anti-glare gloss
Inputs: DVI or HDMI
Stand and fancy extras: Not particularly important
Budget: £150 to £200
Needed before: iSeries at the end of August

Go!

I've been looking at this too (It's a toss up between a new monitor or new laptop and monitors are generally cheaper :P).

Might be worth having a look at these:

Not come to a decision myself though

Just spent an hour reading about 120hz monitors and slightly dodgy korean imports. Fun fun.

Cheers for those links, Seppy. The Dell U2412M is looking pretty good at the moment. Despite the "Hard Choices" page not rating it, all the other reviews of it seem very positive. It's 24", has an IPS panel, a 16:10 aspect ratio (moar screen!), and only slightly above what I was hoping to pay.

Anyone have one of these, or alternative recommendations?

I've never had a problem with the dell monitors I use at work or at home. Though the ones at work are a little annoying to adjust.

And yeah Ash, a lot of people say the monitors from korea are pretty good, especially for the price. It's just the risk of getting something shipped that far and the cost of returns in event of an issue.

I almost ordered one of those Korean monitors myself - still doubting very much!

Either that or get 2 more 24" and go for eyefinity.

problem is that 2560x1440 or 3x 1920x1080 need a fast GFX card = lots of money every year!

Okay, now I'm becoming tempted by the 27" monitors I've been seeing. There seem to be plenty of 27" screens around the £200 mark to choose from. Okay, so they're likely to be TN panels rather than IPS and the resolution isn't any higher, but I don't really want a higher resolution and some TN panels are supposed to be pretty good.

Anyone have good recommendations for 27" monitors at around £200?

I've heard that >24" TN's aren't that great for gaming but it's not something I've experienced myself.

I've taken a gamble on one of those korean IPSs, so we'll see how that turns out!

Could have up to 5 dead/stuck pixels without being "faulty". Just a case of hoping for a lucky one :P

Yeah, just read a couple of very positive articles about the Korean imports, specifically the 27" IPS screens. Seems very tempting...

5 dead sub-pixels is standard Class II fault tolerance, you'd get that on most monitors you buy anyway, the only difference being that if you buy it online here you could send it back because you changed your mind (don't mention the dead pixels!). Sending it back to Korea is likely to be a bit more difficult.

And which graphics card will you use with this resolution?

These monitors are so cheap - and from what i've read these beat the cheap TN panels we all use in our 24" monitors.

HD 6950 (not one of the unlockable ones :( ).

I read quite a few good things about the monitor and that's what tempted me to get one. Of course there are cautionary tales but there are for even the best products. Still I'd hesitate to recommend one simply cos I don't like encouraging people to take the risk :P

Also waiting to see how the customs duty works out.

Looking forward to your experiences!

I could get one for €220 - after taxes that's probably near €300 or 1/3 of a dell ultrasharp 27".
