Patch is live and it's fucking awesome - the removal of the spawn lag has made such a massive difference, though it seems that problem only affected a few people in the first place so YMMV. Shame they've not done anything about Mr Carl Gustav but ah well, next patch hopefully.

One side-effect of the patch seems to be that it resets all your keybindings, so make sure to check them before you join a game or you may find your knife button doesn't work at the worst possible time.

K/D ratio is irrelevant in Bad Company 2, it's the objectives that matter. You can get a K/D ratio of 1 to 10 and still win the match, or a ratio of 10 to 1 and still lose. The screenshots are more about the obscene score I got because of two service achievements and so many other pins that they don't even all fit on one screen. :P

For those who don't play the game, normal "good" scores tend to be around 5000 including award points and I've never seen one higher than 10000. 15000 seems utterly ridiculous and I doubt I'll score that highly again. Also my squad being 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th on my team is quite satisfying. Teamwork FTW. :D

What's the levelling thing all about? I'm assuming this is gonna get some play time at i40, but will anyone new just get their arses handed to them by higher ranked people or does it not really matter? (Apart from that whole 'playing til rank x makes you a better player anyway' thing)

Leveling is important imo, at rank 7-8 you get something which makes it easier to handle your gun ..... aka easier to aim and around 8-9 you get one of the best assaultrifles in the game......

it's not gamebreaking but dying to someone with a ammo and armorupgrade and 3% hp left is a bit frustrating.

Playing for the first time is very daunting, as you have sod all gear and some classes don't even have their defining gadgets. For example, at rank 1 Medics don't have a medikit and Engineers don't have a repair tool. Assault and Recon have a slightly better time of things as they at least have reasonable weapons, but it's still tough. As a result you'll probably spend most of the first rank dying repeatedly and hardly killing anyone.

Your first unlocks are your class gadgets - Assault gets an ammo pack, Medic gets a medikit, Engineer gets a repair tool and Recon gets an enemy sensor. Levelling should then be much faster provided you actually use them (which is the whole point, as you should be playing your class and not just running around trying to shoot people) as you get loads of points for doing what your class is supposed to do.

Higher ranked players do have an advantage as they can pick the best weapons and specialisations, but at the end of the day a few rounds will kill anyone regardless of their rank, class, weapons or specs. Most of what makes a good player is knowing the level, knowing your weapons, specs and gadgets and playing the game properly, and that takes practice. The gear definitely helps, but beyond about rank 8 or so (which doesn't take a ridiculous amount of play time) you'll have most of the good stuff provided you've stuck to one class. If you don't focus on a single class it'll take longer, of course, as you can only unlock class-specific stuff by playing as that class.

It's a pity that once in a lifetime awards such as the silver stars count towards the point total you see at the end of the match because getting really big scores is just a matter of luck. Sometimes you get a load of awards at the same time which are really not very relevant to the game you just played.

Anyway it's a pretty fun game. You do need to level a bit before you are on a even playing field though. However a lot of it's practice and learning how the game works. Having a proper sight on your assault rifle and one that doesn't miss barn doors is quite useful though :P
