Heeuge! build me a pc! / performance woes
Whats the best you can do with £600.
I want something that loads fricking lightspeed with medium (not mental) storage and some futureproof/upgradeability within it. Dont care Intel or AMD (even more willing to try Intel having used AMD for so long, just to see how it goes)
Needs to be a gaming capable rig. Would like to run wow on max settings at a lol res of 1024 with 75fps constant.
Currently got:
amd XP 3000+, 3GB ram, VIA K8T800 Chipset (asus), AGP ati HD3850
I feel I should be getting better performance out of this rig but in 25man raids I go down to 3->7 FPS. Its barely playable. Any lag and I'm fooked. I can't work out if its my PC or what. 1042 with practically everything on low.
I've tried Windows XP64, XP32, 4in1 drivers, different catalyst drivers, still tripe. CPU bottleneck I suspect? Tried overclocking and it makes little difference tbh.
Anyone got any suggestions of what I can do, or does heeuge get to spend lots of luverly dosh?

There should be a seperate forum for Heeugey on these boards \o/

What hardware do you need? Monitor/keyboard/mouse etc or just the basic cpu/ram/vga/mobo/case/psu ?
Heeugey's on the case!
The CPU will be a major bottleneck these days, even the office minimum here is higher than that!

Would it have been the spotty head posted yesterday?
As a quick spec check:
3GHz Core 2 Duo
4GB DDR2
512mb ATi 4750
750GB HDD
Gigabyte mobo with 8x USB, 6x SATA etc
Antec case (the little bro of Ben/Ropey's I think)
580W Hyper PSU
Just under £600 delivered, though I've not checked prices anywhere else yet. Something to do tonight!

And Ash, there's definitely something fishy about your current PC. Even my age-old laptop runs wow okay-ish, with 25-40 FPS in 25 mans.
In loving memory of Jack BauerMr. President, get up or I will kill you right there.

Good point!
OcUK totaled £620 for an identical spec, Microdirect and Ebuyer came to £610 or so and all of them had one or all of inferior ram, motherboard or HDD due to available items.
Seems my quick first spec was fluked out quite nicely
What you need is to head up this way for a weekend to build it, and coincide that with everyone else visiting to play some Left 4 Dead, CoD: WaW, etc to test it out
[edit]
heh, Scan have upped the price of the 4gb Corsair pair from £38 to £41... pushes the total over £600! Still, you're fine if you have your free delivery still
[/edit]
[edit2]
Play.com have a 4gb pack of PC6400 DDR2 (identical timing to the corsair ones) for £24.99 delivered. £15 saved over Scan!
You can also get 5% off your play purchases using this trick. Worked for me on a purchase yesterday so be sure to use it along with quidco!

Re: Heeuge! build me a pc! / performance woes
Same here, and alot of the settings are on Maxx, I think I have the res at something like 1600 X 1200 with all the detail turned up, although sometimes the FPS drops to about 5 when soloing (not raiding)Demonheart wrote:And Ash, there's definitely something fishy about your current PC. I need to start saving cash for a new computer at some point. While it might be running fine for the most part at the moment, I'm sure it won't at some point. And I think rather than saving £1600 and getting a new laptop I'll have to see what the Heeuge can do for me.

Well does anyone have suggestions? Ok AGP is fairly pants these days but it should be good enough...Demonheart wrote:

maybe bios setting? got stuff like fast write on? cache is set to 256 or so, AGP set at 66mhz I think
*shrug*
Heeuge, whats the performance on that gfx card? HDD looks fairly good but is that a fast one? I don't mind losing capacity to get a faster drive unless it makes barely any difference.
Is the antec case steel? would prefer something lighter if possible ...
I'm not fussy at all!
Re: Heeuge! build me a pc! / performance woes
When did you last reinstall windows? It could be that your system's just bogged down with all the porn & spamware you've put on there
As for HDD, the Samsung's are fast & quiet, though if you want performance you'd be wanting a drive with fewer platters. The 750gb one has 3x 250gb platters so getting the 500gb equivalent which has only 2x 250gb makes the throughput (a little bit) faster. A few of the manufacturers (Seagate's .12 model for example) have released single 500gb platter drives but again, for all but the maddest of games / encoding you'll not notice a difference.
Of course you could get a Velociraptor but it's not exactly cost-effective
Regarding the performance of the 4870 - your 1024x res shouldn't be too much of an issue for it in most games
The Antec case is aluminium with Plastic bits - it weighs 8kg or so. Anything else is likely to be either heavier (made of steel) or flimsy (made of plastic).
fussy just means a challenge
