My thoughts on My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic

Post by Demonheart »

I showed an entirely different video in guild chat today, but Ashee and other quick-witted peeps noticed I had a few My Little Pony-videos on my channel. This stirred up a little conversation.

I told everyone I've seen every episode at least twice. Well, I lied, make that three times..

In case you have no idea about the phenomenon that is "Friendship is Magic", let me give you a quick run-through: Legendary animator Lauren Faust (Powerpuff Girls) was given the task of giving the My Little Pony-franchise a facelift, and the rest as they say is history. Legions of adult men in their 20's and over fell in love with the show. By legions I mean hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people, and literally all of the internet feels their presence. It became the single most looked-up meme on KnowYourMeme, doing it in record time. It has since been upgraded to "subculture"-status. Equestria Daily is what you could call the brony headquarters, and it has received over 23,5 million pageviews.

My story isn't too interesting. I was browsing 4chan and, after about two months of not being able to refresh /b/ once without seeing a 200-page pony thread on the front page, I looked into it myself.

What I saw blew my mind. Everyone's initial reaction is understandably utter rejection. After all, every previous generation has been nothing short of an abomination of mankind. That, I believe, is partially why the show exploded in popularity against all odds. I was hooked from the very first episode. Friendship is Magic for me is a throwback back to when cartoons were adventure-fueled and had heart, soul, a plot. Hell, I don't ever recall seeing a western cartoon this good. While I pride myself on having a way with words, I have tried and failed in explaining what makes the viewing experience so magnificent. The terrific animation and warm coloring lure you in, and before you know it you'll have watched 10 episodes. Its greatest achievement has to be just how well it manages to avoid being girly. AT ALL. It's SO_VERY_COOL_, there's no words.

Friendship Is Magic challenged me in a deeper level, too, eventually forcing me to rethink what I consider "manly", "suitable" or whatever. Or, that labeling and categorizing things may be awfully dumb in itself. That there is a hell of an accomplishment. It's My Little Pony, and it's the greatest thing I've ever seen. It radiates pure love and bliss that'll go straight in your heart, bypassing every rational filter in your brain. And it's a warm, fine feeling.

The episodes are 22 minutes and can be found on Youtube. Look up the pilot, anyone who can appreciate great television should not be disappointed.
