Screen Capture Software

I fancy giving a go to recording, editing, and posting some game footage to Youtube.
My first thought was Fraps, but the free version is shocking in that you can record like 2 seconds...
Does anyone do this, or just have some general ideas on some free software that's good for capturing games? I've tried google, and just get swamped and don't know where to start to pick through it all. If I do it enough and enjoy it I'd be happy enough to upgrade to a paid version with plenty of extras, but just trying it out I need a free version.
Same goes for editing, I'd imagine my computer came with something that could do this, but since I've recently reinstalled windows from scratch, I'm missing a lot of stuff...
